CHARACTERS IN-GAME: N/A

CHARACTER
NAME: Edward Elric
CANON: Fullmetal Alchemist (Manga)
CANON POINT: Chapter 76, specifically, here.
AGE: 16
BACKGROUND: Here.

PERSONALITY:
- Emotional: Edward tends to wear his emotions out on his sleeves. It’s never too hard to read him, and even in cases where others might not be sure about his emotional state, they usually won’t have to wait long to figure it out. Ed’s most commonly known for his explosive temper and is seen throughout the series yelling and even smacking or attacking other characters for seemingly small offenses. Calling him short will just about always end up in the other person ending up with a black eye, or at the very least get an explosive response from Ed. Anger isn’t the only emotion Ed has trouble with though. Throughout the series, it’s also fairly common to see him cry, or at the very least, see him fall into low, depressive states. These usually don’t last long due to other characters bringing him out of it or the plot coming in to rouse him, but it should be noted that he’s prone to falling into slumps after some sort of trauma or intense situation. Of course, Ed is capable of experiencing more positive emotions. He gets embarrassingly excited after Winry successfully delivers a baby in Rush Valley, for example.

- Compassionate: Despite his temper, Ed is a very caring and compassionate young man. He often shows empathy for other people experiencing hardships and is seen several times throughout the series going out of his way to help people. The best example of this is probably the situation in Youswell, where he used his wit to obtain the deed to the mines from the corrupt Lieutenant in order to immediately sell it to the miners for the price of one night’s stay and two meals in one of their homes. Edward is also surprisingly good around children. He’s capable of empathizing with them pretty easily, and he does his best to treat them as intelligent human beings, especially considering he hates being treated like a child by adults.

- Skeptical: Edward prides himself on being an alchemist and thus, a scientist. He doesn’t put any faith in religion and he will outright dismiss magic and miracles as being either nonsense or someone pulling some kind of slight-of-hand trick. If he doesn’t understand how something works, he will either make an attempt to figure it out or dismiss it as something he just doesn’t have enough knowledge or experience in to explain, depending on how interested he is in the situation and how much it bothers him. Despite how stubborn he can be, he is still capable of questioning any of his fundamental beliefs as long as he’s given evidence that contradicts them, and he does understand that even the most solid scientific theory isn’t necessarily set in stone.

- Arrogant: Ed’s smart and strong and he knows it. His major arc through the series is him overcoming his arrogance, though by his canon-point he’s mostly been put in his place. He is certainly not perfect though, and he has no qualms with pointing out when other people are wrong (or at least letting them know he thinks they’re wrong). Because of this, he often comes off as rough around the edges to other people and he can be difficult to get along with at times. However, once given a chance for his temper to cool off, he can still come back to see where he went wrong. When he finds himself in the wrong, he is certainly not above apologizing and doing whatever he can to remedy his mistakes.

- Maturity: Edward is able to handle most stressful situations and acts like an adult when he needs to. He takes responsibility for his actions and he fully expects others to do the same. However, Ed is still very much a child, and there are times where it shows. He is still very childish about his Napoleon complex and he also has problems of rushing head-first into something without completely thinking things through, much to the dismay of his younger brother, Alphonse. While Ed can approach a problem with a calm and collected logic, it’s also entirely possible for a stray comment or some kind of shenanigan to send him into a thoughtless argument over something stupid in seconds.

POWERS/ABILITIES:
- Alchemy: Ed’s an accomplished alchemist, meaning he is able to analyze, deconstruct, and reconstruct matter. This usually means changing the shape of an object (most often his automail arm into a blade) or change the make-up of on object (for example, turning steel into aluminum). There are limits to this power, such as the law of equivalent exchange, which basically states that you can’t create something out of nothing. There’s also limits on what you can transmute based on the chemical make-up of something. For example, you can’t transmute water out of lead and visa versa. A metal can only be made from another metal.

- Combat: Edward’s an expert at hand-to-hand combat and can also use his alchemy to supplement his combat. He will almost always transmute his automail to form some kind of blade as a part of his arm, though he will often transmute spears or swords to fight with out of whatever he can grab from his surroundings. Another alchemical supplement is transmuting the ground to make obstacles for his opponent or to change the environment to give him an edge in a fight (i.e. making a platform for himself to jump from in order to reach a taller opponent’s head). From the canon point I’m taking Ed from, he has a lighter, cold-resistant automail which has given him the ability to move much faster than his heavier automail allowed, though it has also resulted in his blows being lighter than before. While certainly not invincible, Edward is more than capable of handling himself against most foes, though others highly skilled and experienced in fighting can give him a challenge or manage to beat him.

- Intelligence: Edward is quite a clever person. It’s stated throughout the series that alchemy can be quite difficult for some people to grasp, and Edward is regarded as a genius when it comes to that as he was able to obtain a State Alchemist license when he was twelve. He can be naïve at times, but that is a result more of his young age and inexperience than any lack of intelligence on his part. When given the time to do so, he can hatch good plans, as seen at Youswell, and he can also think quickly on his feet when he needs to. He's able to wrap his head around most complex ideas and would likely pick up anything he set his mind to rather quickly.
